This
column was the first of the Cosmosil columns designed specifically
for fullerene separation. Developed in the early 1990’s, this
column still stands as the benchmark of HPLC column for fullerene
separation. The Buckyprep was designed for mass separation
of fullerenes with the use of analytical HPLC equipment. The
Buckyprep’s extraordinary retention capabilities allow separation
of up to 100 mg of fullerenes per day when using a 250 mm
x 4.6 mm I.D. analytical column.
Preparative
Separation of Higher Fullerenes |
The
superior fullerene retention of the Cosmosil Buckyprep Column
provides researchers with the ability to produce higher quantities
of purified fullerenes using analytical HPLC equipment. As
an example, a 25 cm x 4.6 mm analytical Buckyprep Column can
be injected with as much as 25 ml (approx. 6.35 mg) of fullerenes.
Using only 500 ml of 100% strength toluene for the mobile
phase and an elution time of 30 minutes, a researcher can
separate 100 mg of higher fullerenes from this column in less
than 8 hours.
Compatibility
with Stronger Solvents |
The
Cosmosil Buckyprep Column also allow researcher to use stronger
and therefore smaller amount of solvents in the separation
process. Typically, 100% strength toluene is recommended as
the mobile phase, but if time is a critical factor in fullerene
separation, chlorobenzene may be used to reduce the separation
time down to one-third of toluene-induced separations.
Mass
Preparation of Higher Fullerenes |
A
Cosmosil Buckyprep Column offers significant improvement in
loadability. A 250 x 20 mm I.D. preparative column can be
loaded with up to 110 mg (45 ml @ 2.5 mg/ml) of fullerene
mixture and produces very sharp separation of fullerenes with
in 50 minutes.
Separation
of Endohedral Metofullerenes |
The
purification and isolation of Endohedral Metallofullerenes
can be easily be performed using a two-stage HPLC Method.
