Health and wellness blogs across the internet are buzzing about the health benefits of Carbon 60, or C60 for short. But this synthetic carbon molecule known as a fullerene is no fast fad. Unlike many of the miracle cures celebrated by online publications, the story of C60 is one that’s supported by science. 

While research is still emerging and most of the current studies involve animal subjects rather than humans, so far the evidence suggests that C60 really could be a “wonder supplement”. Here’s what we’ve learned from recent C60 research across the globe.

In 2019, researchers from the University of Virginia’s Orthopedic Research Lab published the results of their study examining the impact of a C60 derivative on mice and rats in the “International Journal of Nanomedicine.” The researchers conducted in vitro experiments on the macrophage cells of mice, which may help fight inflammation. The researchers found that C60 reduced inflammatory gene expression and the production of nitric oxide, which is linked to inflammatory response, in the mice cells.

The researchers also injected rats with osteoarthritis with a C60 solution. They found this solution reduced inflammation and joint damage in the rat population. While these studies focused on animals, the researchers believe their results could help scientists develop therapeutic treatments for humans with osteoporosis.

Researchers at the University of Kyiv published a paper in “Pharmaceutics” in 2020 after examining the effects of a water-soluble C60 solution on rats with liver cirrhosis. Their study found rats that received the C60 solution were less likely to develop liver cancer or have liver injuries. Their bilirubin and redox markers moved back into a normal range and they had lower liver enzyme levels, which all led to an 82% median increase in post-treatment survival rates. While the study examined rats rather than humans, its results are significant given the prevalence and high mortality rate associated with liver cancer.

Researchers from Capital Medical University in China also observed C60’s protective qualities in research published in the “International Journal of Nanomedicine” in 2020. The researchers found that water-soluble C60 reduced the severity of pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic form of pneumonia impacting the lungs, in a population of mice.

The mice got pulmonary fibrosis after receiving injections of bleomycin, a popular anti-cancer drug linked to this condition. Two-thirds of the mice receiving 10 mg/kg of a C60 solution lived for 21 days, compared to just 30% of mice that received only the bleomycin. The researchers found 10 mg/kg was an optimum dose for the mice, as subjects receiving more or less of the C60 had less favorable outcomes.

This C60 research is significant as a lung transplant is the only current form of treatment for this condition. 

Brain damage is a common complication of diabetes with no known therapeutic treatments. However, researchers from Duzce University in Turkey believe that C60 may hold the answer. As described in their study published in “Neurochemical Research” in 2020, they gave olive oil extracted C60 to diabetic rats for a period of 12 weeks. They noted that the C60 seemed to protect the rats’ hippocampal cells from hyperglycemic stress. The researchers also concluded that the C60 could prevent disturbances in the hippocampus.

Good hippocampus function is vital for making new memories and processing new experiences, so it’s important to keep this part of the brain healthy. While the study is relatively new and involved mice subjects, it suggests that C60 in olive oil could be a vital tool for helping maintain healthy brain function.

Turkish researchers from Ducze University and Firat University found C60 may have added value to diabetics in a study published in the “Journal of Food Biochemistry” in 2020. The researchers gave diabetic rats C60, both as a standalone treatment and in combination with curcumin. The rats that received the treatments increased their levels of antioxidants and reduced their oxidative stress and cholesterol levels. These results saw them maintain their kidney tissue and function. The combination of C60 and curcumin proved the most effective.

High blood sugar levels can damage the kidneys’ blood vessels and nephrons, leading to kidney disease. Currently, one in three diabetic adults has chronic kidney disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many diabetics don’t realize they have kidney issues until their condition is so advanced that they need dialysis or a transplant.

The researchers observed the intestinal cells of mice cultured with C60 during exposure to deoxynivalenol, a type of mycotoxin. While the C60 didn’t reduce the level of deoxynivalenol in the cells, it reduced the levels of reactive oxygen species. This made the cells more viable and less prone to damage. While deoxynivalenol suppressed the immune response, the C60 helped restore immune function, helping the cells fight off the impact of the mycotoxin. This study suggests C60 could be valuable in helping people and animals bounce back from mycotoxin exposure.

Cryopreservation of testicular tissue is a cutting-edge procedure that aims to increase fertility options for prepubescent boys facing certain treatments, such as radiotherapy for cancer. This process involves removing and freezing tissues that contain sperm-making cells from the testicles. Doctors can then thaw these tissues out and retrieve the sperm later, when the patient is ready to conceive.

In 2021, researchers from the Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine published their findings about the use of C60 in this procedure in the “Journal of Nanomaterials.” They froze testicle tissue from sexually immature rats for one month before thawing it and exposing it to C60 solutions of various concentrations. The researchers concluded that C60 was an effective way to rehabilitate cryopreserved testicle tissue, especially in the 15 μg/mL concentration.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has taught society how viruses can threaten our health, economies, and way of life. A team at Germany’s Freie Universität Berlin noted that C60 can prevent viral infection. However, they said the current form of C60 had limited antiviral uses as it doesn’t mix with water, and the human body is around 60% water.

In their study published in 2023 in Nano Micro Small, the German researchers coated the C60 molecules with sulfated polyglycerol, a highly soluble agent with its own antiviral properties. They found their new molecule inhibited cell infection when exposed to SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. The molecule was effective against the original and Omicron strains of the virus. When tested in various cells, the researchers noted no cell damage, suggesting their molecule is non-toxic to humans.

This recent research builds on earlier studies into the antiviral properties of C60. In 2017, Russian scientists designed water-soluble solutions containing C60 which acted as an antiviral against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Years later, many of the same researchers tested water-soluble fullerene solutions, also containing C60, on other viruses, including herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, and various strains of influenza.
