Nanocarbons Division – SES Young Investigator Award

Synthetic Biology Approaches for Overcoming Bottlenecks in Optical Nanocarbon Technologies
by Ardemis Boghossian

Ardemis Boghossian is a tenure-track assistant professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) where she started in 2015 as the lead principal investigator of the Laboratory of NanoBiotechnology. Her laboratory implements a highly interdisciplinary approach to addressing fundamental challenges and developing novel technologies that exploit the synergy between nanotechnology and synthetic biology. Through her focal points in the fields of optoelectronics and protein engineering, she contributes new biological and biochemical methods for the production of durable hybrid nanomaterials for energy and biosensing applications.

Prof. Boghossian earned her BSE in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2007 and completed her PhD in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012 under the supervision of Michael S. Strano. Her graduate work focused on applied nanotechnology, where she engineered nanoparticles that interface with light-harvesting, biological constructs to enhance solar energy conversion. She also developed algorithms for quantifying stochastic fluctuations in fluorescence from single-molecule, nanotube-based biosensors. As a Postdoctoral Fellow at the California Institute of Technology in the laboratory of the 2018 Nobel Laureate Frances H. Arnold, she worked as a protein engineer applying methods of directed evolution to engineer cells that can electronically interface with electrodes.

The Nanocarbons SES Research Young Investigator Award was established in 2007 to recognize and reward an outstanding young researcher in the field of fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and nanostructures (FNCN). Such early recognition of highly qualified scientists is intended to encourage especially promising researchers to remain active in the field. The award is named after the main contributor of the endowment, SES Research.

Award Rules

Purpose

The purpose of the award is to recognize and reward one outstanding young researcher each year in the field of Fullerenes, Carbon Nanotubes, and Nanostructures (NANO)  at The Electrochemical Society Such early recognition of highly qualified scientists is intended to encourage especially promising researchers to remain active in the field. The award will be named after the main contributor of the endowment, SES Research.

The Award

The award, to be given at the spring annual meeting, shall consist of a certificate plus $500.00 and free meeting registration costs to help the recipient attend the Electrochmical Society (ECS) meeting at which the presentation is made.

Award Recipient Requirements

The award, for outstanding research accomplishments, is open to young investigators under the age of 35 as of January 1 of the nominating year. An unsuccessful nomination will automatically remain active for the following two years if there is remaining eligibility. The successful candidate is expected to present a lecture on his or her research work at one of the NANO Division symposia at the spring meeting of ECS when the award is given.

Selection of the Award Recipient

Nomination may be made by the applicant’s mentor or anyone familiar with the nominee’s research work.

In addition to the nomination letter, the following supporting material is required.

  • A summary of the nominee’s research activities and accomplishments outlining, in 2 to 3 (double spaced) pages, the most important aspects of the work and the resulting contributions to NANO science and technology. The candidate’s promise as a future NANO scientist should be considered in light of his or her contribution to the research program as distinct from those of his mentor.
  • A list of the nominee’s publications, reports, memberships, and involvement with scientific societies; awards received; and other related items.
  • Copy of the candidate’s academic accomplishments, and reprints or preprints of publications.
  • Any other pertinent information that might assist the members of the Awards Committee in assessing the candidate.

All information must be sent directly to the Chair of the Award Committee of the NANO Division. Application material will not be returned to the nominators. The manner of processing the entries and judging the award applicants shall be decided by the NANO Award Committee.

Award Committee

The Award Committee shall consist of at least three persons to be appointed by the Chair of the NANO Division. One of these individuals will be designated “Chair” of the Award Committee, and will report the committee’s recommendations to the Division Chair by September 30 of the year. The Chair of the NANO Division will inform the Honors and Awards Committee before the fall ECS meeting as to the recommended recipient of the award. The recipient of the award will be informed after the fall meeting by the NANO Division Chair after approval of the nominee by the Honors and Awards Committee and notification of the Board of Directors. The recipient will be expected to make a presentation, and receive the award, at the following spring meeting.
