What Is C60?
Carbon 60, often referred to as C60, is a microscopic molecule with 60 carbon atoms, which looks similar to a buckyball.
C60 works as an antioxidant in the body, removing harmful antioxidants. Because they’re so small, C60 molecules can reach individual components of your body’s cells. That’s one reason why this compound is being researched for the fields of nanotechnology and nanomedicine.
In basic terms, carbon 60 is a collection of 60 carbon atoms. Carbon 60 (also known as C60) was first mentioned in 1965 in an article written by scientist Harry P. Shultz titled Topological Organic Chemistry. Polyhedranes and Prismanes. C60 wasn’t mentioned again until 1970 when Toyohashi University of Technology professor Eiji Osawa forecasted C60’s existence. At the time he was describing the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecule, a structure that looked like five hexagons surrounding one pentagon. In this description, he hypothesized that there could be a spherical version of this structure.
While Japanese scientific journals reported Osawa’s idea, the translations of the reporting never reached Europe or America.
In the same year, another scientist by the name of R. W. Henson hypothesized the existence of C60 and even made a model of it. However, the scientific community felt the evidence he presented wasn’t strong enough and his findings weren’t accepted. In fact, the only recognition Henson got from his work on C60 was an acknowledgment of his paper in a 1999 issue of the scientific journal Carbon.
Henson wasn’t the only C60 researcher to have their findings rejected by the scientific community. In 1973 a group of scientists in the USSR analyzed the stability of carbon 60 at the quantum-chemical level and calculated its structure. While the researcher’s paper was published in Russia’s Proceedings of the USSR Academy of Sciences, many still didn’t accept the predictions of carbon 60.
Did you know? Taking C60 with olive oil before a workout could leave you less winded in the end.
In 1985, with the help of mass spectrometry, Harold Kroto of the University of Sussex, along with James R. Heath, Sean O’Brien, Robert Curl and Richard Smalley from Rice University, were finally able to give proof of Carbon 60. They named the new arrangement of carbon atoms Buckminsterfullerene after Richard Buckminster Fuller. Fuller was a famous architect whose geodesic domes resembled C60. Any cluster of atoms like C60 then became part of a family class called fullerenes.

Olive oil with C60 made the rats live longer.
The Groundbreaking Study
C60 was on the verge of changing scientific many fields of study, but the biggest change turned out to be in biology. The groundbreaking study was done by Tarek Baati, Fanchon Bourasset, Najla Gharbi, Leila Njim, Manef Abderrabba, Abdelhamid Kerkeni, Henri Szwarc, and Fathi Moussa and published in 2012.
In the study, the researcher team bought ESS60 C60 from SES Research to see its effects on Wistar rats. They separated the rats into several groups. Some groups were given 1 ml of water, some were given 1 ml of olive oil, and the last groups were given 1 ml of olive oil with ESS60C60. Upon studying the rats’ urine, blood, and brain samples, they discovered something amazing. The rats that were given olive oil had increased their lifespan by 30%. But the rats that were given the olive oil with ESS60 increased their lifespan by almost 90%!
In short: olive oil with ESS60-C60 made the rats live longer.

What Effect Can C60 Have on Aging?
This is one of the biggest questions bouncing around scientific circles right now regarding C60 and ESS60. In theory, carbon 60 has qualities that look like they should improve cell health and help people live longer.
Our aging study focused on measuring DNA aging before taking ESS60 and after. DNA chromosomes have protective layers called telomeres that appear to be connected to aging.
Our volunteers took two DNA age tests—one for a baseline and another six months later. The second test should normally show that the person has aged five or six months. What were the results of the tests after taking ESS60?
Instead of showing they had aged six months, the tests said that they were younger than before! The amount the clock had been turned back varied between 1.8 years and 2.7 years. This was just a preliminary study, but we wanted to get a rough idea of whether there’s any factual basis for the current hype or not. It looks like there is, and we can’t wait to see what scientists discover next.
What Were the Results of Our C60 Sleep Study?
For quite a while, we’ve gotten feedback from our clients that carbon 60 has helped them improve their sleep quality. So we decided to determine whether this effect was real or not and how a big of a difference ESS60 made.
What we discovered was pretty amazing. Here are our initial findings, though we’re still running people through this study (and we’ll update this as we gather more data):
- Sleep quality: The participants have a noticeable increase in sleep quality while taking ESS60 compared to their normal sleep routine. Simply put, they slept better every night.
- Time to fall asleep: The people in our sleep study reported falling asleep quite faster when taking ESS60.
- Restlessness: There weren’t many changes when it came to tossing and turning. The amount of restlessness that participants complained about was relatively low to start with, and we didn’t see any real difference with ESS60 in that area.
- Feeling next morning: One of the biggest changes reported had to do with feeling well-rested the next day. The people we interviewed mentioned waking up feeling a lot better with ESS60. Statistically, the improvement was about 50%.
What makes us the happiest is that, so far, all of the participants have mentioned that they want to keep taking ESS60 long term.
So How Does C60 with Olive Oil Work?
As we mentioned in our last blog, one of the keys to preventing aging is to have a diet rich in antioxidants. What’s so amazing about antioxidants is that they can give free radicals the electron they need without becoming a free radical themselves. They are the real givers of nature. And so is C60. Because of C60’s unique atom structure and antioxidant properties, they can stabilize several free radicals without destabilizing themselves. While this has not been studied in humans, C60 with olive oil could be a quick way to the antioxidants you need for a healthier life.
How Much C60 Should You Take?
The amount of C60 you should take depends largely on how pure the product is. For example, if you have a lower-purity product, you’d need to take more of it than if you had a high-purity product. For optimal results, it’s best to take a C60 product that’s at least 99.5% pure. You may only need a very small amount of a product of this purity. We recommend about 5ml per day. This equates to approximately 1 tsp. You can squirt the product directly into your mouth and wash it down with a sip or two of water.
If you dislike the taste of olive oil (which is slightly peppery in flavor), you may want to mask the flavor of the C60 olive oil with food. Try dipping a piece of bread into the oil to mask its flavor and help it go down easier. Over time, you’re more likely to become accustomed to the taste of this supplement and have an easier time taking it each day.
How Long Does C60 Take To Work?
Like all supplements, it takes time for C60 to deliver noticeable benefits to the body. For most people, it takes between 1 to 3 months to start noticing the effects of daily C60 supplementation. If you only take the supplement occasionally and not daily, it will likely take longer for you to see any benefits. Consistent daily usage is important for achieving optimal results.
How Long Does C60 Stay in the Body?
Some scientists think that C60 can stay in the body for up to several weeks. While it’s in the body, it continues to deliver superior antioxidant benefits. Some research suggests that C60 temporarily becomes part of the fat layer surrounding the cells. While buried in this thick layer, C60 provides a reservoir of energy while continuously neutralizing free radicals.
